jTynne Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 (edited) I'll be releasing this once the downloads section is working again, but, yesterday morning I decided I'd take a jab at making a sprite from scratch. I'd never done it before, or even attempted it, so I was pretty nervous at how it'd turn out. After seeing a few tips from DevilEvil on a forum he linked me to, I got started. NekoV got me started with the .act files, which were a paaaaain to edit, but glad that they're finished. XD So.. thoughts? ;_; You can see the sprite's evolution in the screenshots below: http://www.jtynne.co...cs/rucksack.png http://www.jtynne.co...s/rucksack2.png http://www.jtynne.co...s/rucksack3.png http://www.jtynne.co...s/rucksack4.png I'll also be releasing a Poring/Drops/Marin/Poporing version of the rucksacks (sans wings/halo) as well. These'll all be for free of course. -nodnod- Edited December 10, 2011 by jTynne 4 Quote
Yuki Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 (edited) Aww, they're so cute <3.They kind of look like poring-fied cats haha. I actually like the halos and wings on =D. Great job with these sprites! Keep up with the awesome work. Edited December 10, 2011 by Yuki Quote
jTynne Posted December 10, 2011 Author Posted December 10, 2011 D'aww, thank you so much! Yeah, I'll likely make a neko rucksack from these at some point.. >_> XD Quote
Gaypuff Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Pretty cute. I want to say I prefer these to Happy's, but I'm not sure for nostalgia reasons. xD For first-time sprites, they're quite excellent though. Quote
Chemical Crush Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Although I do enjoy happy's rucksacks, I have to say I really like these as well. I like how they're a little more detailed? I dunno how to word it really. But they're super cute, keep up the good work. Quote
jTynne Posted December 10, 2011 Author Posted December 10, 2011 D'aww, thank you! >.< It means a ton hearing such nice things from two of the greatest spriters I've ever come across over the years. >.< Thank you thank you thank you! ;; Quote
DevilEvil Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 It's a bit difficult to know which ones are better. Main reason is that we don't have solid official references to know how rucksacks should be in RO. I think we must focus on a 3D effect and dark edges (and give it some type of heavy feel, it's a rucksack after all). I've been making several rucksacks examples lately to find out how they should be made. These ones are pretty cool though . Edit: This example may help http://www.divinero.net/devilevil/pandaexample.png Quote
jTynne Posted December 10, 2011 Author Posted December 10, 2011 (edited) Thank you, Mirage! Here's the overview of the recolors: Once the downloads section is back up, they'll be available for download Edited December 10, 2011 by jTynne Quote
Arcenciel Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 They're pretty well done for a first sprite.I think the shading is done fairly well as it gives the illusion that the bag bulges out compared to it just being flat. I'm not sure if it's just me but the Poring and Drops seems to be one or two shades off from the original monster color. Can anyone else see this? I think the wings along with the halo can be improved upon. For the wings, may I suggest looking over the wings on the Angeling hat. I think that would be a good reference. Congrats! Another skill soon to be added to your repertoire Quote
jTynne Posted December 10, 2011 Author Posted December 10, 2011 ! Yeah, the colors are a tad off on all of them, I think.. I used a Poring as the base for the original, but when I started working on the act file, the colors got darker for some reason. Not sure what that was all about.. >.< I did use the others as reference but eyeballed everything as far as color is concerned. Will likely go back through for the wings and halo at some point as you pointed out XD I also need to fix the Poring sprite.. there's a little line on the bottom left for some reason T_T Thank you for your criticism, Arc! <3333! Quote
iFoxkun Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 This is way much better compared to the original once, but that's my opinion only. I suck at spriting D;. I can really seem to get the base and such (yeah its just the outline...) Hmm.. Just one question, how do you make the collection picture. I can't really make one D:. Quote
jTynne Posted December 11, 2011 Author Posted December 11, 2011 I'm going to just do screencaps personally for mine since I can't draw for my life. XD Thank you for the compliment! Quote
iFoxkun Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I'm going to just do screencaps personally for mine since I can't draw for my life. XD Thank you for the compliment! Thanks for the answer ;D. I forgot I could've done that since I barely got Photoshop xP. (I dunno how to use the gale thingy.) Either ways, I can't really seem to get the sprite done from scratch, I messup on the In between view alot, Quote
Macrox Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 @TS What program do you use for spriting? Quote
DevilEvil Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 GraphicsGale is recommended for any type of Pixel Art work (though I would recommend you to read a guide first). Quote
outofcuriosity Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I think they turned out very nice! I'm sure you must have a talent. If the colours looked a little different after you started on the ACT, it might be that you've set the colour mask by accident, or the ACT you used as a base file already had this property set. Every sub frame in the ACT specifies a RBGA mask, which can be used to change the opacity and shift colour levels. If you're using actOR you can view or change this value under the AABBGGRR property in the action sub sprite list. FFFFFFFF is the normal value. 7F7F7FFF means they sprite is 50% opaque with 50% green and blue levels so that the sprite appears transparent and dark red (almost like the curse effect). Perhaps you already knew, but it seems the most likely explanation! Cheers! Quote
jTynne Posted December 11, 2011 Author Posted December 11, 2011 @TS What program do you use for spriting? I used Paint Shop Pro 7. If you need a download for it, PM me and I'll send you a link. THANK YOU @ outofcuriosity. That's extremely helpful! I actually had no idea what that field was for. You rock! Will be checking out Graphics Gale now @ DevilEvil Quote
iFoxkun Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Graphics Gale, DevilEvil I read your guide. The way you set it up, I want to do that, all my things were oversized .... I quit trying xD.. Quote
Saki Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 @TS What program do you use for spriting? I used Paint Shop Pro 7. Holy cr*p! I'm still using ms paint. Haven't been able to drift to another program yet, just hard to get used to. Quote
Gaypuff Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Or GIMP, since it's free. But you don't need pricey programs such as PS or PSP to make awesome sprites. MS Paint does the trick too. Quote
jTynne Posted December 11, 2011 Author Posted December 11, 2011 True! I simply use PSP 7 for the layers. I think it's available on oldversion for free since Jasc was bought out by some other company (Corel? It's been years since I've kept up with PSP). I also have a download of v7 for anyone who needs it or wishes to try it out. Quote
