topic, it looks like its just some project of a conveniently packed mmorpg, if it was just "hats" thats one thing but its practically every aspect of the game....

 

i was just wondering ,

im pretty sure eathena was before this but whatever, was there something before that?

did that actual ragnarok koreans release this?

rAthena is a fork from the original eAthena project. Since eAs demise, rA has come on in leaps and bounds in an effort to emulate the kRO servers as much as possible using the data we're able to obtain. 

As for being a kids project, the average age of the dev team is ~27. The average age of our user base is much lower.

anyway rathena was from eathena, and eathena was from athena ...
athena has renamed as jathena ... yup, early eathena has bunch of japanese comments on them

official ragnarok emulator is Aegis btw
you can google search for it ... some people leak it on github

Basically developers bored and crazy enough to work for no money whatsoever recoded the whole server engine of the Ragnarok Online MMORPG, mainly due to legal reasons and to be able to easily add customization.

Then that project split up into many different projects because people who are not getting paid have the tendency to get into pointless fights about how to approach certain things. And language barrier.

Actually, the official ragnarok server a.k.a. AEGIS was originally written by Hakkyu Kim, and it was replete with inefficient code. Throughout history, bits and pieces of AEGIS leaked due to hackers invading ragnarok online's official servers, and they served as a base for creating the open-source emulators.

As someone that has dabbled into Game Developing, crappy code is a constant even in AAA games you can witness it yourself if you take on some kind of modding, so, some kids out there do it out of love producing very efficient and clean code and scripts that i would take it any day over some of the AAA code i've seen in my lifetime, so, the right question here would be "How good are the coders of Rathena?".

Back in the day i tried a ton of emulators, 3Ceam?(was it?), eAthena, And some other crap, rAthena seems the most stable so far to my humble opinion.

As for "Official", strive for greatness not for labels.
