error with MySQL please help

Question

I get this error whenever I try opening a connection with mysql. I just installed it for the first time on this computer, haven't changed any settings, the only thing I did was click "New Connection" under the left server box in mysql. Then I entered the settings you see in the last box in the pic above (with a pass ofcourse). But it doesn't even let me enter the pass when I try to open the server before it gives me the connection error. How could I have done something wrong? I've used mysql before, and I don't remember having to tweak any settings besides for port forwarding in order to connect. Am I forgetting something?

Is your SQL Server running?

What do you mean? I'm using workbench to try to open a localhost connection.

If you're asking if it continues on to open the connection after I get that error, then no. I click ok, and I'm back at the main workbench window.

Edit: I tried putting as much information as I could in my first post, the only thing I didn't think of, is what version of mysql I am using. I'm using MySQL workbench version 5.2 I believe. If you need any other information more then this, let me know.

I don't get what you mean... of course the server is not running properly, I keep getting this error, so I can't run it. lol. I've tried closing mysql workbench and re-opening it, but it gives me the same error.

I recommend you use something AIO like xampp or VertrigoServ but in your case you need to kill mysqld.exe from your Task Manager and run it again (don't forget to click on "Show processes from all users")

oooh yea, xampp i've used before. You need that to run the mysqlserver don't you?

Edit: Yup, I just downloaded and installed Xampp and tried mysql workbench again and it got past the error. Problem solved. I'm stupid. Sorry for wasting your guy's time =P Is there a way to delete/close this thread?
