  1. I realize not every client will work so easily but I've tested quite a few I could get my hands on and they work without issues so far.
  2. Hello All! After some research and determination I have found how to get any RO client (or at least the few I've tested) working under Ubuntu properly. I will describe the process in steps in this post so that others may benefit from my time and hard work! Step 1. Download PlayOnLinux - This step is easy as you can download it from their website http://www.playonlinux.com or from the Software Center in Ubuntu. Step 2. Choose "Tools" -> "Manage Wine versions", once the new window for this has opened install version 1.5.21 or the newest version of Wine should probably work too. Step 3. Next choose "Install" in PlayOnLinux and choose "Install a non-listed program" from the bottom of the window. In the new window follow the prompt and hit next -> New Virtual Drive -> next -> Name the drive whatever you want -> next -> Use another version of Wine -> next -> Choose the version you installed in the last step -> next -> 32 bit installation -> next. Step 4. PlayOnLinux will create what is called a Wine prefix. Once it has done that, push cancel. Then go to your home directory should be named the same as your username on the system. You will need to show hidden files to see the directory that you'll need to go to next, it is called ".PlayOnLinux" (and yes I did put the "." there on purpose). Step 5. Once in the ".PlayOnLinux" folder open up the folder called "wineprefix" then the folder that has the same name as the virtual drive you set up earlier. Open up "drive_c" and then program files and copy your RO files into that drive. Step 6. Head back to the PlayOnLinux program and choose the "Configure" option. Select the virtual drive you set up on the right and then click the button labeled: "Make a new shortcut for this virtual drive". Select the RO client you are using and the Setup.exe Congratulations! Now you should have shortcuts to those applications contained within your Wineprefix's virtual drive, which means you should be able to open the setup and change the settings for the game, and then run the client to play the game! Just as an FYI if you didn't know but the shortcuts should be generated on your desktop but you can move them wherever you want and even go a step further as to use add a .desktop file to point to them so that they show up in the dash (you can also accomplish this with alacarte, I believe it is sudo apt-get install alacarte to download and install it). Anyway, enough of my rant, I hope someone finds this helpful and have fun playing RO on the best OS on the planet! (Disclaimer: Did not test this on other distros but I imagine it would work with most of them).
  3. Maybe if you had some interesting content that you would give to players who donate you might be able to make some moolah, but it couldn't be content that they can get from another server for free. Good luck.
  4. I'm sure there are plenty of projects you can lend your talent to and I'm sure that most of them would understand not having a ton of time because of work/other projects to spend on their server. Welcome to the community and I hope you decide to stick around!
  5. We could absolutely use an artist's talents, just let me know. That goes for anyone who comes across this forum post as well!
  6. So far I've been adding new quest NPCs (such as Bounty Hunting and Monster Slaying events) as my friends and I got bored quickly because of a lack of low level quests after we created the new server. Now we are looking into changing the entire start of the game as the opening tutorials are alright but we want the opening more story intensive (and by we I mostly mean I, as so far I am still teaching some others how to script). We are running a small server but are more than happy to invite anyone interested to play or contribute to the customization of the server! Also we have an IRC channel if anyone wants to really get involved, just PM me and I'll send you the info on that. The exp rate is the same but we've made little tweaks to the combat. Our ultimate goal is to transform the server(s) to be more story intensive and quest driven, with plenty of special events.
  7. I'm not too familiar with this client but I have heard a little about it. Does anyone know if it is compatible with normal RO servers? Or only the RO mobile servers?
  8. Hello All, My name is Ryan (obviously, see username...) and I've set up a server and been doing a ton of scripting customizing it since. In the real world I'm a system administrator and I think RO is a great RPG and I'm hoping to become a contributing member to the rAthena community as this forum has been my primary source of information since I began this endeavor. So here I am posting an introduction!
  9. I realize this is an old post but I thought I should share. You can use Amazon EC2 with a micro instance for free for the first year. It's what I'm using and everything works great.
  10. kangfredy I realize you have probably figured everything out since you posted but I thought I'd follow up so others could get some understanding. You can install playonlinux in 12.04 and 12.10 that I've tested and have worked. Once you've install playonlinux you should have a default wineprefix (wineprefix = environment wine sets up for running Windows applications) that will run the game client without needing any tweaking. Simply navigate to the folder and run the client and you should be playing. If you find you need to change anything (as far as WINE/Playonlinux goes) you should go to the dash and type in "wine" and you will be presented with a few tools that PlayOnLinux installs so that you can change some of Wine's settings. Using Wine can be tough at first but once you've played around with it you will find you are able to install some things for Windows in Ubuntu that won't even run on WIN7/8. If you have any questions or need further assistance I'd be more than willing to assist. Also, if you've already fooled around with your installation of WINE a lot you may need to uninstall and reinstall playonlinux/wine.
