What is SOPA and PIPA *Information taken from Wikipedia SOPA and PIPA represent two bills in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate respectively. SOPA is short for the "Stop Online Piracy Act," and PIPA is an acronym for the "Protect IP Act." ("IP" stands for "intellectual property.") In short, these bills are efforts to stop copyright infringement committed by foreign web sites, but, in our opinion, they do so in a way that actually infringes free expression while harming the Internet. Detailed information about these bills can be found in the Stop Online Piracy Act and PROTECT IP Act articles on Wikipedia, which are available during the blackout. GovTrack lets you follow both bills through the legislative process:SOPA on this page, and PIPA on this one. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for the public interest in the digital realm, has summarized why these bills are simply unacceptable in a world that values an open, secure, and free Internet. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOPA and PIPA are, in a way, evil. Mozilla Firefox, FaceBook, Wikipedia, ComputerWorld, Google and so many other sites are protesting against SOPA and PIPA to make the internet free of such things. If SOPA and PIPA wins the protest, hundreds of sites that you use daily for entertainment, communication and so much more will be removed. Your so much loved, Wikipedia will be blacked out and removed, like it was on January 19th 2012. Wikipedia and many, many other sites were blacked out or are blacked out to fight against this act, let the world know what this can do to all these sites, and let SOPA and PIPA know what damage and horrible acts they are doing or what they will do if this protest is lost. IF YOU AGREE WITH THIS PROTEST, AND WANT TO HELP FIGHT SOPA AND PIPA, POST A REPLY IN THIS TOPIC OR CHECK OUT WHAT IT CAN DO TO YOU http://www.1stwebdes...can-affect-you/ Edited January 20, 2012 by Keim 3 Quote Link to comment

I've been fighting it since it was known as Protect-IP. They've lost a lot of supporters because of all the "black-outs" today - which is awesome! 2 Quote Link to comment

Most of their sentors will vote yes because they're being paid despite the majority of the state being againist it. If we don't make our voices heard and spam their phone lines with objections they will just continue to vote yes and support this bill. We don't need our rights infringed. This is America, founded on the idea of unalienable rights. 1 Quote Link to comment

I am from NY; my senators are all support the bill. Despite the fact that the vast majority of NY being against it. Apperently 3 million dollars in their pocket > the voice of the people they are supposed to represent. It angers me to no end. They're supposed to represent us (NY) while according to most polls, at least 80% of us are against this act. How can all the NY senators vote yes? It's obviously not what the people who live in the state want. Quote Link to comment
