Having hard time to just setup mysql root password

as mention above, i have try like tons of password combination but seems to fail..

 ... Failed! Error: SET PASSWORD has no significance for user 'root'@'localhost' as the authentication method used doesn't store authentication data in the MySQL server. Please consider using ALTER USER instead if you want to change authentication parameters.

On which system do u try to set it?:Do u use ssh for and which command ur using?
