Where do I start in terms of creating sprites similar to the style of RO?

I read the stickied posts, but what are the most modern tools (I'm on OSX) and instructions for making sprites like that of RO with frame? I'm programming a mobile game in my freetime and love the artwork of RO.. Thus far I've been using the frames off of ratemyserver as placeholders, but I'd ultimately like to make something similar on my own. How difficult is this trek?

I don't know what exact programs they use to create sprites, but Using a program like GIMP (free) or Photoshop(costs, free from the right source) you can start creating sprites pretty easily. I made a pretty crummy Shaman class with a wolf pelt and some other knick knacks a long time ago using just GIMP.

 

If I happen to find out which programs they use exactly (or their derivatives) I'll post here to let you know.

 

Also, if you want to possibly join me and some other guys creating custom classes, we could use your willingness and talent.
