I saw some servers on which it saves without using any NPC. What are they using?

I set my renewal.h to Pre-Renewal and I noticed that I can't warp to renewal maps no more. Are the monsters etc also removed when set to pre-renewal in renewal.h? EDIT: However if I use @go brasilis I can get there but there are no portals. Is this normal?
