Where to start?

Question

Posted

Hello! I'm sure you are all sick and tired of hearing this. I'm trying to help myself as much as possible, but there's so much information to take in.

My friend and I are looking to start a private server together. From what we can tell, before we even get started, we need to get webspace with a mySQL database set up, or am I completely on the wrong track here? I'm sure there has to be a guide somewhere on where to begin from a completely blank slate, but I've yet to see one.

So, I hope I'm not asking too much here or sounding too lost and hopeless, but basically it would be greatly appreciated if we could get advice on what we need to do first, and the best way to go about doing that! Things like what host you would recommend, what type of dataplan we would want to start out on, what we need to download, etc.

Thanks!

That's certainly helpful! In the video, your setting up the server to connect to your local computer. Ideally, we would want to install the server onto the webspace and not on one of our computers, would we not? I don't think it'd be much of a different process, but are there any webhosts that are recommended among the private server communities? Thanks!

Well yes, that's running a localhost. But I don't know if you can set your RO server up running it off a webhost. I know you can set it up with a VPN/VPS (AsuraHosting). I don't think your server would be very fast/secure running off a webhost, though. [if it's even possible.]

Oh, see, that's just me not knowing anything! That's incredibly helpful. :)

Don't worry man, I've been in your shoes. I know how frustrating it will get. That's why I made the video to try to help some people along. If you need any help, message me.

But you should atleast set it up first on your own machine and familiarize yourself with it. That is what I am doing right now, I am also making a private server, with the help of Sharpienero's tutorial.

Yeah, that's a good idea. While I'm here, I have a few more questions if you don't mind:

How easy/difficult is it to set up a server for pre-Renewal? Is there a specific eAthena package meant for pre-Renewal or is it something we would have to work out ourselves?

How easy is it enable/disable things like Battlegrounds and Jewelcrafting?

Thanks!

I had mine from eAthena forums, but their forum is already down. I suggest you work hard with Renewal, because pre-renewal is slowly dying and no one is updating it anymore.

Hrm, I don't know. To be completely honest I haven't actually tried renewal myself yet, but just looking at the changes it really doesn't feel like Rangarok to me, and all of the most popular servers right now are all pre-Renewal.

Renewal isn't that great, to be honest.

So what would be the steps to set up a server for pre-Renewal, then? Is it a lot of extra work or is there simply a toggle for it?

Awesome, and that will disable all renewal mechanics, 3rd jobs, changed monster spawns, etc? :D

Also, are Battlegrounds enabled by default, and if so how, would I disable them?

Thanks!
