installation error

im currently having a error when i try to make a mysql installation in my linux.. when i put the password it say that

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

please move this to the right section if this is not the right section for my problem..
