DayZ is a mod for Arma2 that is getting very popular.

Currently there are over 1 million players and rapidly increasing.

So, how many of you guys play DayZ?

For those who are wondering what DayZ is:

General

A zombie apocalypse / survival game.

You strand on a 225 km2 open world with lots to explore.

Zombies and players (bandits) are roaming around out there to kill you.

You need to find weapons, something to eat and drink to survive. You can do this by either raiding empty houses or killing other players (only if you have a weapon ofc).

The servers have a real-life day-night cycle timezone dependent. So if you are living in the gmt+2 timezone and play at night, the gmt+2 server will be night to.

All the "official" servers have something called "hive" means a network connection to the dayz "hive" server wich contains your charater data.

So the character you create will be the same on every hive server. Same items, location and stats.

Character

Your character starts with 12000 Blood (your health) wich is the maximum.

Blood can be drained by various means. The most common ones being a hit from zombies, a shot from other players, bleeding (after being shot or hit) and diseases.

Once your character dies, you will lose everything. Your items, stats just everything. (And yes you will die a lot at the beginning, so don´t get used to your items)

You will need to create a new character and start again. You will always spawn somwhere around the coast.

The World

The world is open and simply put: huge. You will need hours to simply cross the map once.

Many towns, farms, military bases, deer stands, open fields and woods to explore and to die in.

Loot

There is loot all over the place. Different kind of houses and buildings are giving different kinds of loot.

There are weapons & ammo, food & drinks, survival items (compass, map etc), medic supplies (blood bags, painkillers, bandages etc) and vehicles to be found.

I really like this mod. Even tho it still has many bugs etc. It is fun and you can get really scared and paranoid.

Thinking that there might be somebody chasing after you and stuff.

The zombies are more a pain in the ass than a threat. They can inflict bleeding and infection wich can kill you if you don´t have bandages etc.

But the real threat are the other players. Most of them will fire if they spot you and many high geared bandits are waiting somewhere near big cities to snipe you down.

This game has a huge immersion and is more for tactical players.

You need to crouch and crawl most of the time in cities etc. Always be on the lookout for other players and loot all you can.

The average life of a player is about 50 minutes. I am currently alive for a about a few weeks (about 70hours estimated) and have pretty good items.

And I´ve only made it so far because of teaming up with a friend. Wich is about the best thing you can do. The more people you are the higher your survivability.

I can attest to this. Best shooter I've played in a long, long time. Wouldn't it be fun if there was a type of custom RO server that ran EXACTLY like DayZ?

The best thing about this game are the "rl effects". Meaning adrenaline rushs, fear and other things that might happen to you.

I doubt that you could make a ro server to be as affecting as dayz currently is. The overhead view is reducing the immersion and you would need a "real" character dead.

It is possible tho. Just a few client edits like viewpoint and stuff and it could work. It just wouldn´t be as good as dayz.

Wise. The alpha of that should be out before the year is over.
